T20 World Cup 2024: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has announced that the selection committee has decided not to appoint a vice-captain for the men’s cricket team ahead of the T20 World Cup 2024. This decision follows revelations that Shaheen Afridi was not interested in taking up the role.
In a statement, the PCB confirmed, “During Friday’s selection committee meeting, discussions on vice-captaincy took place. However, it was unanimously decided not to appoint anyone. As such, no offer was made to anyone.”
Sources had previously reported that selectors approached Shaheen Afridi regarding his interest in the vice-captain role, but the discussion did not advance after Afridi expressed his lack of interest. Earlier this year, Afridi was removed as captain, and Babar Azam took over as captain for white-ball cricket.
The PCB has already announced the squad for the T20 World Cup, which is set to begin on June 1, with matches taking place in the United States and the West Indies. The PCB praised the squad, stating, “This is an extremely talented and balanced side that has a mixture of youth and experience. These players have been playing together for some time and look well prepared and settled for next month’s event.”
Pakistan is placed in Group A for the tournament, alongside India, Ireland, Canada, and the USA.
