PCB Releases Statement On Vice-Captain Controversy Ahead T20 World Cup 2024

  • The decision follows Shaheen Afridi’s refusal to accept the role.
  • The PCB stated that the selection committee unanimously decided against appointing anyone.
  • Pakistan has announced their squad for the upcoming World Cup, scheduled to start on June 1.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has announced that the selection committee has decided against appointing a vice-captain for the men’s cricket team ahead of the T20 World Cup 2024.

The cricket board’s statement followed the revelation that Shaheen Afridi was not interested in accepting the vice-captain role.

“During Friday’s selection committee meeting, discussions on vice-captaincy took place. However, it was unanimously decided not to appoint anyone. As such, no offer was made to anyone,” said the PCB statement.

“The side is fully united, committed, and keenly looking forward to the upcoming matches in the UK and the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024,” the statement added.

Previously, multiple sources reported that selectors had approached Shaheen Afridi about his interest in the vice-captain role. However, the discussion did not progress after Afridi expressed his lack of interest.

Earlier this year, in March, Shaheen Afridi was removed as captain, and Babar Azam took over as captain for white-ball cricket.

It’s important to mention that Pakistan has already announced their squad for the upcoming World Cup, scheduled to start on June 1, with matches taking place in the United States and the West Indies.

“This is an extremely talented and balanced side that has a mixture of youth and experience. These players have been playing together for some time and look well prepared and settled for next month’s event,” the PCB stated in a press release.

“Haris Rauf is fully fit and bowling well in the nets. It would have been nice if he had gotten an outing at Headingley, but we remain confident that he will continue to maintain an upward trajectory in the upcoming matches, as he will have an important role to play along with other strike bowlers in the T20 World Cup.”

Pakistan is placed in Group A for the tournament, alongside India, Ireland, Canada, and the USA.
